Make a difference through listening

Are you a good listener?.png

The power of befriending and why it matters!

Do you have a compassionate heart and a desire to make a difference in someone’s life, and most importantly, are you a good listener?

If so, Pershore Plus Volunteer Centre has an ideal opportunity for you, as we are seeking a dedicated team of volunteers to join our Befriending Service who can contribute to the well-being of individuals in our community.

Isolation and loneliness can feel overwhelming, so our volunteer team is here to listen, support, and provide a sense of companionship to those who may be struggling. We believe in the power of human connection, and we’re eager to begin helping people reconnect to the support they deserve. By providing companionship and support, you can help individuals reconnect with the community and improve their overall well-being.

Why befriending matters

The power of human connection cannot be overstated. In a world that can feel disconnected, especially to those who are lonely and in need, our befriending service offers a much needed lifeline.

The project, which is powered by a dedicated group of volunteers, matches individuals with trained and compassionate befrienders who will offer both emotional support and practical assistance where needed.
The power of befriending

Befrienders will engage in meaningful conversations, whether in person or over the phone, with a focus on providing comfort, companionship, and a friendly voice to simply listen.
Befriending improves well-being and reduces isolation

Befriending helps individuals feel less alone and more supported. This boost in mental health fosters a sense of community connection, reminding individuals that they are not alone in their struggles.

Befriending can stop individuals from reaching crisis point

Loneliness is a silent adversary that can lead to more serious health issues. Simple human interaction through befriending can prevent loneliness from escalating, thereby reducing pressure on health and social care services.

Befriending is mutually rewarding

The beauty of befriending lies in its reciprocity. Volunteers often find a sense of purpose and form social bonds. Many describe experiencing emotional rewards that are as significant as those of the individuals they support.

Getting Involved

At Pershore Plus Volunteer Centre, we ensure that our befriending service is as beneficial for our volunteers as it is for those they support. Our structured approach includes:
  • Training and DBS checks: All volunteers undergo thorough training and background checks to ensure all safeguarding measures are in place. We want our volunteers to feel confident and ready to make a difference.
  • Careful matching: We match volunteers with individuals based on shared interests and preferences. This careful matchmaking fosters meaningful and lasting connections.
  • Regular supervision and support: Our volunteers receive ongoing support and supervision to maintain the quality and effectiveness of the befriending relationship. We are here to ensure you never feel alone in your volunteer journey.
  • Scheduled visits or calls: Befrienders engage in weekly scheduled visits or phone calls. This consistency offers reliable support and companionship to those who need it most.
